It was just over month ago at Gamescom that we gave you a first look at AMD FidelityFX™ Super Resolution 31 (AMD FSR 3) in Forspoken, one of the first games being updated with the latest version of our cutting-edge open-source FSR upscaling technology.
Along with this preview, we also shared that Immortals of Aveum™was also going to soon be updated with AMD FSR 3, and now we’re extremely excited to be able to tell you that FSR 3 is no longer “coming soon” and is available starting TODAY in both of these incredible games. You can download the FSR 3 updates for Forspoken andImmortals of Aveum NOW.
AMD FSR 3 Technologies
The two key updates in AMD FSR 3 are frame generation and the new “Native AA” quality mode. FSR 3 frame generation uses an enhanced version of AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) optical flow technology and temporal game data such as motion vectors to generate additional high-quality frames for a higher framerate in supported games, up to 2x2. You can learn more technical details about how FSR 3 frame generation works in our new in-depth blog on GPUOpen.
When combined with super resolution upscaling, this technology enables massive framerates in supported games, even at 4K using the highest game settings. Frame generation can be used with any of the AMD FSR upscaling quality modes, including “Quality” and “Performance”, so the ratio of upscaling image quality to performance can be configured to suit individual preferences.
The new “Native AA” (Native Anti-Aliasing) quality mode applies high-quality anti-aliasing and sharpening without any upscaling for improved image quality over native resolution. There is a modest performance cost when using this new mode, but when combined with frame generation, “Native AA” mode can provide enhanced image quality and a boost in framerate.
Massive Performance on AMD Radeon
For our first look at AMD FSR 3, we showcased how frame generation technology when combined with super resolution upscaling can deliver massive framerates in supported games, but we were only able to provide you results from testing of a pre-release version of Forspoken, and only on AMD Radeon™ RX 7900 XTX and RX 7800 XT graphics cards. Now that FSR 3 is available, here is an updated look at how it performs in Forspoken across a wider range of GPUs, both AMD Radeon RX 7000 Series and RX 6000 Series3,4.
Maximum Fidelity Gaming
Similarly in our first look, we showed you how the new “Native AA” mode performs on the AMD Radeon™ RX 7900 XTX and RX 7800 XT graphics cards. Now we want to give you another look at how “Native AA” mode plus frame generation offers the best of both worlds — improved image quality and performance — across a wider range of GPUs5,6,7.
Latency Reduction Results
As part of our first look, we told you that AMD FSR 3 includes built-in latency reduction technology for responsive gaming experiences when using frame generation technology. However, we didn’t provide any latency data, and we know this is something many of you have been asking for, so let’s have a look at the motion to photon latency in Forspoken and Immortals of Aveum when using AMD FSR 3 and frame generation on the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX and RX 6800 XT graphics cards8,9.
You can see from these results that when measured in Forspoken and Immortals of Aveum at 4K and 1440p at the highest graphics detail settings on the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX and RX 6800 XT, AMD FSR 3 reduces overall latency to enable more responsive gaming by boosting framerates with upscaling. Then on top of that, when you enable frame generation for even moreperformance, there is only a marginal difference in latency when compared to using only AMD FSR 3 upscaling.
Additionally, we are working to combine the benefits of our new driver-based AMD Radeon Anti-Lag+ technology10 (part of AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition™ application and compatible with AMD Radeon™ RX 7000 Series graphics cards) in a future update to Anti-Lag+ to help further lower latency in supported games when frame generation is used.
Frame Pacing and Recommended VSync Settings
It is recommended to use AMD FSR 3 with VSync, as when enabled, frame pacing relies on the expected refresh rate of the monitor for a consistent high-quality gaming experience. Additionally, it is recommended that Enhanced Sync is disabled in AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition™ settings, as it can interfere with frame pacing logic. A game using AMD FSR 3 in this configuration will show a “zigzag” pattern on frame time timing graphs in performance measuring tools such as AMD OCAT. This is completely expected and does not indicate uneven frame pacing.
FSR 3 can also be used with VSync disabled, for example for performance measurement, but the experience will be less optimal due to frame tearing inherent to not having VSync enabled. For more in-depth details about how AMD FSR 3 frame pacing works, you can check out our technical blog on GPUOpen.
We recommend using the latest version of AMD OCAT (Open Capture and Analysis Tool) to measure performance and frame times, and a new version was just released with full support for AMD FSR 3. AMD FSR 3 can also be measured using tools such as Intel® PresentMon, MSI Afterburner, and the Steam performance overlay.
Recommendations for Frame Generation Use
When using AMD FSR 3 frame generation with any upscaling quality mode OR with the new “Native AA” mode, it is highly recommended to be always running at a minimum of ~60 FPS before frame generation is applied for an optimal high-quality gaming experience and mitigate any latency introduced by the technology. Consequently, we suggested you adjust the game graphic settings, resolution, and FSR upscaling quality mode to achieve this, based on the capabilities of the graphics hardware being used and your overall system specs.
How to Enable AMD FSR 3 in Supported Games
Forspoken
In Forspoken, the AMD FSR 3 settings are found in the “Graphics” tab of the settings menu. To change the FSR modes and turn on frame generation the “Image Quality Presets” must be set to “CUSTOM”.
Immortals of Aveum
In Immortals of Aveum, the AMD FSR 3 settings are found in the “Display” tab of the settings menu.
More Games Getting AMD FSR 3
When we announced AMD FSR 3 at Gamescom, in additional to the two launch games released today, Forspoken and Immortals of Aveum, we let you know that 10 other games are expected to add support for FSR 3. Well, today, we’re thrilled to let you know that the list has grown with the addition of 2 more amazing titles, including EVE Online and Pax Dei.
With the addition of these new games, our list of game developers and publishers committed to supporting AMD FSR 3 has grown to 19 with addition of CCP Games, Mainframe Industries, and Turtle Rock Studios, and we expect this list to rapidly expand as more developers come on board in the future.
Additionally, as we mentioned at our Gamescom reveal, we are working with Epic Games to release an AMD FSR 3 plug-in for Unreal® Engine 5 to help make integration of FSR 3 into UE5 games as easy as possible.
AMD FSR 3 Supported Products
AMD FSR 3 is an open technology that does not require machine learning (ML) hardware, allowing it to be supported on a broad range of products and platforms, including consoles. When using FSR 3 with super resolution upscaling and frame generation we recommend the following hardware:
Supported and Recommended Hardware for using AMD FSR 3 with Upscalingand Frame Generation | |
AMD | NVIDIA |
Supported: Recommended: | Supported: Recommended: |
(Note: we do not suggest using frame generation on products lower than our recommendations above. How frame generation performs will depend on the capabilities of your GPU and on older hardware you may not have an optimal experience and may see little to no improvement in performance.)
AMD FSR 3 may work on a broader range of hardware beyond what we recommend above. If just using super resolution upscaling WITHOUT frame generation, we recommend the following hardware:
