7 Tester-Approved and Weatherproof Outdoor Rugs (2024)

Do you wish you could upgrade the appearance of your apartment's concrete slab patio? Or maybe your wooden deck needs a pop of texture. No matter the size of your outdoor space, an outdoor rug instantly grounds a seating area and softens the surface underfoot.

To find the best outdoor rug to transform your space into an outdoor living room, we tested over 30 outdoor rugs in real-world scenarios, some for up to six months. NYC-based interior designer Jennifer Hunter says the most important thing to consider when buying an outdoor rug is the material and our testing confirmed this. "You want something that is stain- and mold-resistant, waterproof, and won't fade from direct sunlight," she said.

Through simulated tests and weeks of use in the real world, we tested each rug's durability and weather resistance, which is another huge factor when shopping. Outdoor rugs are also known for having a scratchy or plasticky feel, so we sought to find actually comfortable and cushioned options.

All of the rugs on this list blew us away with their appearance, quality, and durability, so having a cozy and stylish patio or deck setup is definitely possible. Just add patio furniture!

Editor's Note: This story was updated in July 2024 after testing seven additional outdoor rugs.

What We Like

  • Comes in runner, square, and round options

  • Laid flat right after opening

  • Extremely durable and easy to clean

  • Lightweight and easy to maneuver

What We Don't Like

  • Can show dirt over time

After using the Safavieh Courtyard Collection Area Rug on an uncovered deck with lots of inclement weather and foot traffic for weeks, we're confident it belongs in the top spot on our list. Through thunderstorms, pool water, dirt, debris, and falling leaves, it held up and cleaned off beautifully.

It's machine-woven from polyester and polypropylene fibers, which have been treated to stand up to stains and exposure to the elements. Upon arrival, there were no loose threads or snags, and it stayed firmly in place throughout our various tests. It also laid completely flat (and stayed that way) after just five minutes—without using a rug pad underneath, we saw zero curled edges or lifting, and while we were walking on the rug, it never moved or slipped.

When the rug inevitably got dirty, we used a power washer to clear off leaves and debris and remove embedded dirt. We loved that it looked equally nice when it dried. While we noticed a few edges of the rug looking dirtier after using it for a few weeks, we found that regular power washing cleans it off almost entirely. Plus, for a high-traffic area without protection from the elements, we expected a bit of wear and tear. Still, we were extremely satisfied with the rug's durability with rain, sun, and multiple people tracking mud and water on it day after day.

We tested the 8 x 10-foot option and found it very easy to lift and maneuver—another plus of this pick. We didn't need an extra hand to move or install this rug on our deck. Plus, we love that there are tons of other size options to perfectly fit your space, including circular, runner, and accent rug sizes.

Dimensions:32 sizes available |Shape: Square, round, runner | Material:Polyester, polypropylene | Care: Hose down, spot treat | Colors: 10 options available

What We Like

  • No shedding

  • Repels water

  • Never slipped when used with rug pad

  • Durable in high traffic area

What We Don't Like

  • Curled up a bit at first

The Rugs.com Border Outdoor Rug is our best budget pick because it's an affordable option that doesn't sacrifice style or quality. After weeks of exposure to sun and foot traffic on an outdoor deck, it still looks as good as new without the need for cleaning or vacuuming.

We placed an outdoor furniture set over this rug, but the parts not covered with tables and chairs still looked incredible after weeks of exposure to the elements. We even felt comfortable walking on it with bare feet, which also speaks to the comfort of the rug. Many outdoor rugs can feel rough or scratchy, but this one felt high-quality and sturdy without discomfort. It also never shed or frayed.

When installing this rug, it did curl a bit in the corners. We used weights to push it down for two days for good measure. Afterward, the rug laid completely flat without issue. While it didn't rain while testing this rug, we poured water on it, and it repelled instantly. It was then easy to soak up with a paper towel, so we're confident in this rug's ability to withstand storms in the future.

We recommend adding the outdoor rug pad, which we used while testing. The rug itself does not have an anti-slip backing, so this prevented the rug from sliding around under our feet. The rug comes in three natural shades and 12 square, round, and rectangular sizes.

What We Like

  • High-quality look and feel

  • Absorbs water and dries quickly

  • Recycled materials

  • Lies flat right away

What We Don't Like

  • Very heavy

The quality, look, and water-absorbing qualities of this rug from Pottery Barn make it worth the splurge. The gorgeous rug has a simple striped design with fun fringe edges and looks beautiful enough to display in your living room or back patio as we did. However, for being so attractive, this rug was equally durable and weather-resistant, to our pleasant surprise. We were also impressed by the feel of this rug compared to other outdoor rugs we've used in the past: It was one of the softest outdoor rugs we've ever tested.

We experienced a few huge rainstorms while testing this recycled polyester rug and it immediately soaked up all the water, but it did dry in the sun quickly, just a few hours later. We had a similar experience with dog pee. In this case, we soaked up as much as we could, added some soapy water, and rinsed the rug down. It remained unchanged. Otherwise, this option has not collected much dirt or mud over time. If collecting dirt and debris is a major concern, we recommend choosing a dark color from the beginning.

While you can buy a rug pad separately, the heavy rug stayed in place for us on a concrete patio topped with patio furniture. Speaking of the weight of the rug, we recommend asking a friend to help carry it to your desired location and lay it out. Luckily, the rug lies completely flat right out of the package, which means less work for us. It also didn't shed or fray at all.

Dimensions: 4 sizes available | Shape: Rectangle | Material: Recycled polyester | Care: Hose off, blot spills | Colors: 5 options available

What We Like

  • Easy to clean

  • Resists water and dries nicely

  • Comes with non-slip rug pad

  • Soft and comfortable

What We Don't Like

  • Requires large washer

Ruggable has tons of excellent rugs—it's one of our favorite places to shop for rugs—but if we could only choose one, we'd go with the Outdoor Rainier Dark Wood Rug. While not as cushioned as indoor rugs, we found this option comfortable to walk on and softer than other outdoor rugs we've tried. Plus, the pattern mimics an indoor rug, which we love for transforming your outdoor space into a cozy living area.

Every Ruggable rug comes with a rug pad. It arrived folded separately from the rug cover, so both laid completely flat as soon as we laid it out, which we love. The rug pad is also a few inches smaller than the cover, so you'll never see it peeking out and ruining the look.

We used this washable rug on two outdoor patio spaces, where it was exposed to wind, rain, sun, dogs, and muddy post-gardening shoes. For spills and quick rainstorms, we found the water pooled on the surface and easily soaked up with a towel or rolled off. When soaking after a big storm (which happened a few times during testing), the rug dried nicely in the sun after a few hours without bunching or shrinkage.

So far, we haven't noticed any fading in the sun. But, we think the naturally distressed design lends would continue to look great even if it did fade slightly.

Like all the brand's offerings, this one is conveniently machine washable—just make sure your washer has a big enough drum to accommodate the size you get. You can also tumble dry it, but to ensure it lies flat after washing, you might want to smooth it back out and air-dry it in the sun instead. We found that spot cleaning and hosing off the rug when dirty worked perfectly as well without affecting the rug's quality or appearance,

What We Like

  • Vibrant, statement-making design

  • Easy to clean

  • Natural moisture resistance

What We Don't Like

  • Only one color option

We love this design-forward rug from Rifle Paper Co. that instantly makes a statement in your outdoor seating area or other space. Made in collaboration with Loloi Rugs, it has a vivid monstera print specially treated to resist fading from the sun and continuous wear. But, if you don't love the Monstera design, Rifle Paper Co. sells two other indoor/outdoor rugs.

This rug comes in six sizes—4 feet to 10 feet long—and has been power-loomed in Turkey from durable polyester, which is then treated for mildew resistance (ideal for areas with a pool). The top is made with 100 percent wool, giving it a soft, plush feel that we love, and the wool has natural oils that make the rug more water-resistant.

After testing this rug for six months on a partly covered patio, we can confidently say that it is durable and weather-resistant. The green colors remained vivid, which was a pleasant surprise. The rug soaks up water during rainfall but dries very quickly. The lightweight rug is very easy to lift and move around if needed, but still stays in place without the edge's curling.

Plus. the non-slip backing stayed firmly secured to the ground, preventing the rug from bunching or sliding around during use. When it inevitably got dirty, we used a broom to sweep away crumbs and dirt. On occasion, we spot cleaned areas with a brush and this worked very well. We are worried about the long-term durability of the thin rug, but so far, we are extremely impressed. This rug has especially been a bright pop of color when testing it through the winter.

What We Like

  • Lightweight yet durable

  • Quick-drying

  • Easy to clean

What We Don't Like

  • Small difference in sides

  • Spot clean only

An easy way to experience more value from an outdoor rug is to opt for a reversible option, like the Tillie Indoor/Outdoor Rug from Urban Outfitters. With a bold geometric print, this rug is made of 100 percent recycled plastic that is UV-, mold-, and mildew-resistant. When used on our outdoor patio in the hot summer sun, the fabric never overheated under our feet and the woven texture allowed for airflow for quick drying after rainfall. Even when our deck remained damp, the rug felt completely dry the day after the rain.

Despite its length, this rug is lightweight and easy to move. We found that it didn’t bunch up easily during testing. It arrived with a burlap carrying bag and elastic straps to tie it down, which we appreciate for storing this option. When the rug inevitably got dirty with debris and leaves, we brushed and washed it without requiring heavy scrubbing. We do wish you could hose it off for a deeper clean, but the manufacturer advises against this.

After six months of rain, wind, and snow exposure, the rug still looks brand new without any loose threads or fading. However, we did notice over time that the rug's edges began to rise, which could be a tripping hazard. To combat this, we recommend placing patio furniture on the corners to weigh down the lightweight rug.

We didn't love that there’s not much difference in the appearance of the two sides. This makes the reversible factor more functional and ideal for messes and stains but it didn't offer the design versatility we initially expected.

What We Like

  • Durable yet soft

  • Versatile

  • Easy to clean

What We Don't Like

  • Largest size is 9 by 12 feet

The nuLOOM Wynn Rug is 100 percent polypropylene braided into an extra-strong flat weave. Designed with high-traffic indoor or outdoor areas in mind, it's ideal for families with kids and pets. In addition to being exceptionally resilient, it's remarkably soft with the flexibility of a traditional rag-braided rug, which we loved during testing.

The lightweight rug was easy to move around and install in our space, but we think it's best on a flat patio or deck because we could still feel large rugs under our feet when walking. Unfortunately, this option was not quick-drying and still felt wet the day after a rainstorm. Therefore, this might be best for a covered patio or in a climate with little rainfall.

The textured design offers an organic, down-to-earth touch to outdoor dining and sitting areas. It's easy to maintain too: Thanks to its water-resistant design, the Wynn can be hosed down and spot-cleaned using a synthetic carpet-cleaning solution. We blotted one stain from a spill and that removed it completely. We also used a vacuum and broom without any issues. Plus, it comes in 12 colors so you can customize your patio setup based on your aesthetics and choose a color based on its exposure to debris and leaves. For example, darker colors may not show dirt and debris as quickly and easily as darker colors.

Final Verdict

After extensive testing, the best outdoor rug is the Safavieh Courtyard Collection Area Rug, which is durable enough for prolonged exposure to wind, rain, sun, and foot traffic. If you're looking for something a bit more affordable, you can't go wrong with the Rugs.com Border Indoor Outdoor Rug, our best budget pick.

How We Tested the Outdoor Rugs

We've tested 140 rugs, including over 40 outdoor-specific options, through the years both at The Lab and in our own homes for up to six months. We thoroughly evaluated each option on a variety of factors.

  • Quality: We started by unboxing them and reviewing their construction and material. We noted the overall quality of the rug, looking for any visible dye variations and if the rug laid flat. We also assessed the texture of the rugs, feeling them both with our hands and walking on them barefoot. We even placed rocks under the rugs and noted how sharp they felt through the rug when barefoot.
  • Durability: To test each rug's durability in the lab, we placed a large potted plant and a patio chair on top. We then dragged the items from one end of the rug to the opposite and looked at the rug for any snags or pulls. For real-world tests, we left the rugs exposed to the elements for weeks, noting any changes in appearance or quality.
  • Ease of cleaning: In the lab, we also stepped on the rug with muddy feet and spilled grape juice and BBQ sauce on them. We noted how easy it was to clean up each of these messes with a broom and whether a scrub brush was necessary to lift stains. In our own homes, we followed the manufacturer's cleaning instructions to see how easily the rugs were cleaned.
  • Water-Resistance: We sprayed any rugs listed as waterproof with a hose in the lab or left them out in the rain and then felt them to see if the water had dispersed evenly over the surface without soaking the entire rug. For washable rugs, we sprayed the entire surface of the rug and then left them to dry overnight in our parking garage. We checked how dry those rugs were the next morning and also looked at how much moisture they left on the surface underneath.
  • Overall Value: Once all of our tests were complete we thought about the overall value of each rug and looked at the retailer's price.

Only the rugs we tested and loved made it into this list. We will continue testing our favorites at home to see how they hold up over time.

How to Choose an Outdoor Rug

Pay Attention to the Material

All of the options on this list are made of polyester or polypropylene (a type of thermoplastic), which tends to be softer underfoot than natural fibers like jute. Plus, while waterproof options are a little harder to come by, synthetic materials offer some water resistance.

When shopping, Decorist designer Elise Payne says to think about the elements and whether the area will be covered. "I love a jute rug for outdoors, but a natural material would be better suited for a covered area, as it isn't quite as mildew-resistant as a synthetic rug," she notes. "Synthetics, on the other hand, are pretty indestructible."

For something sustainable, consider our best reversible pick, the Tillie Reversible Indoor/Outdoor Rug, which is made from recycled materials.

Consider Required Maintenance

"The great thing about outdoor rugs is they are typically so easy to clean," says Payne. Though it depends on the material and weave, most polyester and polypropylene options can be rinsed off with a hose and air-dried in the sun, including our best overall, the Safavieh Courtyard Collection Area Rug. We used a power washer during testing and it worked perfectly to remove dirt and debris.

Flatter weaves, like our best braided pick, the nuLOOM Wynn Braided Indoor/Outdoor Rug, can also be swept, vacuumed, and even scrubbed if needed. Beyond standing up to the elements, this low-maintenance appeal is why many people use outdoor area rugs in high-traffic indoor spaces.

For even easier maintenance, consider a rug you can throw in the washing machine. Our best washable pick, the Ruggable Outdoor Ranier Dark Wood Rug, comes with a rug pad and a rug cover that can be cleaned in the washing machine. Just be sure your rug can fit in your washing machine before choosing a size.

Measure (and Re-measure) for Size

Outdoors or inside, no matter where you place it, sizing is crucial. As with indoor area rugs, outdoor rugs should be big enough that either all furniture legs can be placed on top or just the front two. For dining areas, make sure it's large enough that the entire table and all chair legs can go on top, preferably even when pulled out.

Some outdoor rugs come in just a few select sizes, while others come in dozens of sizes. Our best overall pick, the Safavieh Courtyard Collection Area Rug, comes in the most sizes on our list.
